Joining a board provides us with so many wonderful opportunities! Most new board members see the chance to meet new people and to make a difference in a cause that matters to them. They may even see that serving on a board looks good on their LinkedIn profile. But there is so much more if you take full advantage of this role.
Here are suggestions about how to maximize your board service:
-
- Join with an open mind and the intention to learn. I have seen many people from the corporate world come to a board meeting bringing corporate biases and strategies. Those perspectives are important, but also it is important to listen to challenges and opportunities that are different in the nonprofit space. You will be able to contribute so much more–and frankly will be heard so much more- if you are willing to hear that there are different ways of doing things, especially when there are fewer resources which nonprofit leaders are adept at managing.
- Volunteer to lead. Serving on a board is such a great learning opportunity. You may not be the head honcho in your current position but that does not mean you can not be a Board Chair. With board service, if you are willing to do the work and can inspire others, you may land a leadership position. Start small by serving on and leading a committee (Governance, Finance, Development.) Next become a board officer like a secretary or vice chair. Ask a board colleague who has been in that position to mentor you as you grow. You will see that board colleagues are more forgiving of mistakes than a boss and you will develop quickly. You can then take those new skills back to your workplace.
- Try something new. I think we are all programmed to capitalize on our strengths and you certainly do not want to leave them at the door. But, if you are unsure about your knowledge of numbers, why not attend a Finance Committee meeting to learn? You have never planned an event? Schedule time with members of the Development Committee and learn about their plan and strategies.
- Be an “engaged” board member. What does that mean? It means follow through on what you say you will do. Clarify what the expectations are of board members when joining the board and then meet them. Attend the board meetings. Attend events. Show up! Make a donation. Become an ambassador for the organization in the community. Ask how you can be helpful.
If you enter board service with the right mindset, you will have the potential not just to contribute and make an impact but to develop your skills and learn!
